Slow-twitch vs. fast-twitch

Did you know…there are 2 types of muscle fibers?

Slow-twitch are used in distance running while fast-twitch are used in speed/sprints.

In order to get fast one needs to incorporate both these muscle fibers.

A marathoner who only runs slow distance miles will never take it to the next level without conditioning both slow and fast twitch muscles fibers.

While it’s important for the runner to use those slow twitch muscles fibers to increase the miles it’s equally important to activate those fast twitch muscle fibers to improve on overall pace.

So what does that mean for you….

  • Speed work/drills
  • Tempo/steady-state runs
  • Fartleks
  • Plyo-metrics

All of these mentioned will help you improve on activating your fast twitch muscle fibers while you rack up your mileage.
